A proposed new phase of modernisation of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s nuclear applications laboratories at Seibersdorf in Austria will cost approximately €24.8m in new funding, agency director-general Rafael Grossi said.

In his introductory statement to the board of governors Mr Grossi said the second phase of the so-called ReNuAL project would include the construction of a new building to house the remaining three labs, the refurbishment of the dosimetry lab wing of the existing lab building, and the replacement of ageing greenhouses. These are essential for the agency’s work on climate-smart agriculture, resource management and food security.

Mr Grossi said the modernisation of the laboratories is one of the most exciting and ambitious projects ever undertaken by the agency.

Four of the eight laboratories at Seibersdorf now occupy brand new facilities. “However, the need to modernise three other laboratories was not addressed under ReNuAL, and the dosimetry lab still requires further improvements,” Mr Grossi said.
