There are significant opportunities for the US Department of Energy to increase its preparedness for creating a “unified and integrated” programme for the storage, transportation, and disposal of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste, a report by the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board says.
The report says the DOE needs to incorporate a number of recommendations in the report as core principles of such a programme, including taking not of lessons learned from progress made by countries such as Finland.
Other recommendations include transparent decision-making and developing site-suitability criteria before the start of site selection.
