A group of business, labour and regional organisations have formed a coalition called Diablo Canyon 2045 to push for the state of California to amend its legislation so it can grant a lifetime extension to its sole commercial nuclear power station.

In early April, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) granted a 20-year extension to the 1,138 MW Diablo Canyon-1 reactor to 2044, and the 1,118 MW Diablo Canyon-2 reactor to 2045. Both plants are owned and operated by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E).

However, California would need to amend its own state legislation, which currently allows the plants to operate until 2030, for operations to continue until the mid-2040s.
