Planned units would be small enough to be transported by road and air
The US defence department plans to issue prototype contracts this week for mobile, small nuclear reactors, as part of a two-step plan towards achieving nuclear power for US forces at home and abroad.Defense News reported that the department is set to award up to three contracts to start a two-year engineering design competition known as ‘Project Pele’ for a small nuclear microreactor designed to be deployed with forces outside the continental US.
