The Russian-built Belarusian-1 nuclear power plant has been connected to Belarus’ power grid and has started producing electricity, according to Belarusian electricity operator Belenergo and state-owned news agency Belta.
Belta quoted the energy ministry as saying “the turbogenerator of the first reactor of the Belarusian nuclear power station was connected to the unified electricity system of the country”.
Belta also said the first unit at the station, near Ostrovets in western Belarus, is scheduled to be put into commercial operation in February 2021 and the second in May 2022, confirming a delay of about two years over original schedules for the two Russia-supplied Generation III VVER-1200 plants. Unit 1 had been scheduled for commercial operation in December 2019 and of Unit 2 by the end of 2020.
