20 Jul (NucNet): Construction of the United Arab Emirates’ first nuclear unit officially began this week with first safety concrete poured for Barakah-1, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) said.
The announcement came one day after ENEC was issued with a construction licence to build two South Korean APR1400 reactor units at the site.
ENEC said it had poured more than 1,500 cubic metres of concrete to form a portion of the foundation slab of the unit 1 containment building, which will ultimately house the nuclear reactor.
The next phase of construction will include the continued pouring of concrete for the reactor containment building, the auxiliary building, the turbine building and cooling water structures.
Earlier this week ENEC also received approval from the environmental regulator for construction of the two units.
