Construction has begun in China of two indigenous Hualong One nuclear power plants at the Changjiang nuclear station in the island province of Hainan off the country’s southeast coast, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) said in a statement on its website.
The announcement came after China Huaneng Group, which owns a controlling stake in the project, announced it had been given a licence from the country’s nuclear regulator to build the two plants.
The company said the licence from the National Nuclear Safety Administration meant construction had officially begun with a commercial operation date for both units scheduled in 2026.
Construction of the new units, Changjiang-3 and Chiangjang-4, was approved by China’s state council in September 2020.
