Rolls-Royce SMR and GEH-Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) have confirmed they have submitted their final tenders to Great British Nuclear (GBN) at the end of a six-month period of detailed negotiations on the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) in the UK.

Last year the two companies were invited by GBN, the government body set up to oversee the deployment of new nuclear power plants in the UK, to submit a final tender along with two others – Holtec Britain and Westinghouse Electric Company UK.

Holtec and Westinghouse had not confirmed their submission of final tenders as of Friday afternoon, 11 April, but it is expected they will do so.

GBN has said the four SMR designs, each of which is proceeding through the UK’s regulatory process, are all “viable options for development”.
