China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) announced on 17 December that it has started the main construction phase of Unit 6 at the Ningde nuclear power station in Fujian province in the southeast of China, following the successful pouring of first concrete for the nuclear island.

The Ningde station currently consists of four 1,018 MW CPR-1000 pressurised water reactor (PWR) units, which began commercial operation between April 2013 and July 2016. The CPR-1000 was designed by CGN based on a French 900 MW design imported in the 1980s.

Units 5 and 6 will both be indigenous HPR1000 PWRs, also known as the Hualong One, each with a capacity of 1,210 MW.
