CDI will be responsible for decommissioning, demolishing and cleaning up the single-reactor facility now that site ownership has transferred from Entergy Corporation to Holtec.
In August 2019 Entergy completed the sale of Pilgrim to Holtec. Pilgrim, a 677-MW boiling water reactor unit, was shut down permanently on 31 May 2019 after 46 years of commercial operation.
Entergy said the shutdown decision was the result of “a number of financial factors” including low wholesale energy prices.
Entergy said Holtec plans to complete major decommissioning activities at Pilgrim “decades sooner than if Entergy had continued to own the facility”.
