Prodigy Clean Energy and Lloyd’s Register are to collaborate on the development of lifecycle requirements for transportable nuclear power plants (TNPPs) with a view to potential deployment in Canada by 2030.
Prodigy said the project will be partially funded by a CAD2.75bn ($1.9bn, €1.74bn) Canadian government award under a federal small modular reactor (SMR) programme.
The aim is to produce models for transportable nuclear power plant marine fabrication, marine transport and centralised decommissioning.
Lifecycle requirements for a nuclear plant cover everything from initial design and construction to operation, decommissioning and eventual disposal of waste and site recovery.
