Montreal-based engineering services company AtkinsRéalis has been awarded a contract by US utility Energy Northwest to support the potential deployment of small modular reactor (SMR) plants in the US state of Washington.

Earlier this year Amazon signed a deal with Energy Northwest to deploy a combination of four X-energy Xe-100 nuclear power modules, with an option to increase to 12 modules. Amazon had previously announced an investment in X-energy, developer of the Xe-100, an 80-MW Generation IV high-temperature gas-cooled SMR.

Amazon said at the time that it is committed to investing in new nuclear energy technologies that can help power its operations and provide safe sources of carbon-free energy to the grid.
