Up to eight more nuclear reactors could be delivered on existing sites as part of a “bold” new energy strategy which aims to boost UK energy independence, wean the country off expensive fossil fuels and tackle rising prices.

The government’s British Energy Security Strategy sets out how Britain will accelerate the deployment of new nuclear, wind, solar and hydrogen, whilst supporting the production of domestic oil and gas in the nearer term – which could see 95% of electricity by 2030 being low carbon.

It says the speed of new nuclear deployment will accelerate from the construction of one large-scale reactor a decade to one a year.
