Germany will permanently shut down three of its remaining six commercial nuclear power stations on Friday as part of a nuclear phaseout policy put forward by former chancellor Angela Merkel a decade ago.
Berlin decided to speed up its phasing out of nuclear power following the Fukushima disaster in Japan in 2011 when an earthquake and tsunami destroyed the coastal nuclear station north of Tokyo.
The reactors, Brokdorf, Grohnde and Gundremmingen-C, run by E.ON and RWE, began operation in the 1980s. They are all pressurised water reactor units and have a gross capacity of 4,254 MW between them.
