Belgium has permanently shut down the Doel-2 nuclear reactor unit near Antwerp after 50 years of operation, making it the fifth reactor in the country to be taken offline under a previously agreed nuclear phaseout framework.

The country's nuclear regulator said operator Engie-Electrabel disconnected the 445-MW pressurised water reactor unit from the national grid during the night of 30 November to 1 December.
