Nearly 60% of the Swiss population supports the construction of new nuclear power plants, according to a survey commissioned by the Swiss Association of Electricity Companies (AES) in the runup to a crucial parliamentary debate.

According to the survey, conducted by the GFS.bern research institute, 79% of respondents want to continue operating nuclear power plants as long as they remain safe, while the construction of new generation facilities receives 59% support.

The survey was published as Switzerland’s lower house of parliament, the National Council, began a two-day debate on energy policy with nuclear at its centre.

The lower house is expected to decide on the plans for nuclear power plants later today (9 June).

In a statement on 8 June the National Council said the possibility of building new nuclear power plants in Switzerland was causing division in the federal parliament.
