Members of the FOTA4Climate initiative submitted to the Germany embassy in Warsaw an open letter signed by Polish scientists, intellectuals, activists and citizens. The letter was addressed to the German government, parliamentarians, churches and citizens. It said nuclear power plants in Germany and other countries should remain operational until “effective, state-of-the-art technologies for the storage of power generated by renewables are implemented”.
The group said abandoning low-carbon nuclear power before the end of burning hard coal and lignite will result in technical and technological problems which will be difficult to overcome in the short term and will require the continued use of other fossil fuels, mainly natural gas.
In December 2019, FOTA4Climate and similar groups in Germany protested against the closure of the two-unit Philippsburg nuclear power station in Karlsruhe, southwest Germany. Philippsburg-1 was shut down in 2011 and Philippsburg-2 in 2019.
