Fifty three percent of voters support the construction of new nuclear power plants in the US, with 21 percent of them saying they “strongly” back the idea, according to a poll by Scott Rasmussen.

The poll showed that 31 percent oppose the construction of nuclear power plants, with 14% are strongly opposed.

The poll also found that 57 percent of people believe it is very important for the US to reduce or eliminate our reliance on foreign sources of energy.

Forty-nine percent of voters believe it is possible for nuclear power plants to replace other energy sources and generate all the energy America needs. Eighteen percent believe it is not possible, and 33 percent are not sure.

The US’s 93 commercial nuclear power plants in 28 states provide about 20 percent of its electricity and more than half of its zero-carbon energy.

The only commercial nuclear power plants under construction in the US are Vogtle-3 and Vogtle-4 AP1000 units in the state of Georgia. The project has seen a number of delays and signficant cost overruns.
